Building a Scalable Med Device Customer Training Program

September 16, 2024

Overview

A surgical instruments provider needed a scalable approach to customer training in order to achieve their goal of bringing innovative new treatments to market. Studion transformed their limited in-person symposium to an online course that educated surgeons on new techniques, expanded reach, and aligned with the company’s reputation for excellence. The organization now has a scalable and effective digital learning platform they can use to deliver future courses and training.

  • Digital transformation of an in-person symposium to a scalable online learning platform.

  • Doubled reach over the prior three years’ in one online session.

  • Increased positive learner feedback and engagement.

  • Designed for ADA accessibility and the unique needs of the client’s audience (healthcare providers).

The Organization

Studion partnered with a medical device subsidiary of a global Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company. Our partner develops innovative surgical technologies and solutions. In cooperation with their global clinicians and healthcare experts, the organization addresses major therapeutic areas, including metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Our partner has a long history of innovation and a reputation for their collaborative approach that focuses on real human needs. Training across new devices and techniques is critical to advancing their mission.

The Challenge

Our partner had collected extensive research that could change medical approaches to obesity. In order to influence care, they needed to educate surgeons at scale. They relied on in-person symposiums with healthcare providers to share new approaches, technologies, and solutions for their patients. While highly-regarded, these symposiums limited their reach to 20-30 people at a time and were extremely costly to both host and attend. Our partner wanted a way to make these sessions more accessible, affordable, and impactful. The solution needed to increase the ROI of their digital product offering and deliver a highly engaging experience on-par with the quality of their in-person symposiums.

The Solution

In partnership with Studion’s team of Learning Experience Designers, the team designed and built a digital learning experience that connects surgeons to their patients, their peers, and their medical community. The self-paced solution easily fits into the unpredictable and inconsistent schedule of medical professionals. By using Studion’s High Engagement at Scale framework, the team was able to prioritize elements that would showcase our partner’s unique capabilities and meet their learner’s individual needs.

Unbounded Inclusion

Unbounded Inclusivity

The course was designed and built from the outset based on ADA requirements and guidelines for accessibility. Through this experience, medical professionals (and by extension their staff and patients) gained a nuanced understanding of obesity as a disease.

Learner Centered Content

Learner-Centered Content

The course is self-paced and learners absorb content on their schedule, instead of traveling to a symposium. The asynchronous format also allowed our partner to share knowledge from prestigious specialists across diverse fields. The short-from content allows learners to engage quickly, finding specific information for their own patients.

The Impact

The first online session reached more than 800 professionals, doubling our partner’s reach through in-person events over the previous three years. Learner feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

  • 95% of learners said it was an excellent course

  • 97% of learners would recommend it to their colleagues

  • Learners describe the online offering as “superior” to the in-person model

One learner shared “This has opened my eyes to everything we’ve been getting wrong for years.”

Our partner now has a scalable and effective digital learning platform they can use to deliver future courses and training.
